2025 Summer Camp Curriculum: Day 2

Jesus Lights the Way

The following is a preview of this summer’s curriculum, “Who Are You Jesus.” This is written by Karen Matthias-Long from the ELCA Outdoor Ministries Curriculum. Karen is an alumni staffer from Camp Mount Luther. Our theme on Day 2 is “I Am the Light of the World.”

During their first trip to camp, Gwen and Charles discovered they couldn’t make it through the week without their flashlights! They never knew it could be so dark. Living in the city Gwen and Charles were used to the lights shining through their bedroom windows at night. Being without city lights was a new experience for them. They were afraid. Fortunately, they both packed flashlights; the flashlights turned out to be great night-lights! The campers kept them handy in their sleeping bags. The light took away their tears. The flashlights were also useful to follow the path from the campfire to the cabins. The light helped guide their way.

Jesus is like a night-light and a flashlight. If we know and trust Jesus, we can face our fears better instead of running from them; and we will be more certain which decisions to make. Our problems may not disappear, but Jesus will help guide us. If we know and trust Jesus, then the light of Christ will shine through us to others so that others can know Jesus, too

God’s Word: Make a commitment with other family members or a friend to read the bible every day to discover what God wants and hopes for us. Knowing what God hopes and wants to for us can shed light on our lives. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” Read about it in John 9:1-11.

Think about it: As followers of Jesus, we can show the light of Jesus Christ to others. How can you do this in your home? School? Church? Community?

What you can do: Imagine Jesus walking beside you, helping you carry your fears or helping you find your way. Then, say a prayer during those times when you feel afraid or lost, putting your complete trust in Jesus.
