December 21, 2022: The Supreme Gift

Reading: Hebrews 1:1-4

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

Reflection

At this point in the Advent season, I am weary. All the parties, eating, food, gifts, and movie watching catch up to me and I am weary of it all. But, I push through, because gifts need to be wrapped and food needs to be made and still there are more parties to attend. Thankfully, even amidst the busyness there is Jesus. There is still that peaceful silent night when all the things that happened in the past year come flooding to my mind and there in the singing, in the candlelight on each face, there is Jesus. Wonderful counselor, beautiful savior, Lord of all the nations. There is Jesus. The king, the one promised from Isaiah long ago has come to each of us. All the chaos stops, and we are reminded once again that God, in fact, is with us. We hold on to each note, treasure each word, and feel the power of the gift we are given. There in that silent night, our Lord’s love is given abundantly in the gift of His one and only Son. Shining through the darkness in our world, Jesus reigns as Lord of all. We are reminded of that gift, that night when love came into the world.

Prayer

Lord of all, we thank you for the message you have sent to the world through your Son, our savior. We are blessed by a love so great and powerful, and we are called to share that message and love with all. In the busyness of this season, remind us of that quiet night when love came into our world and the greatest gift was given.

Amen.
