The Disciple Behind the Scenes

By Chad Hershberger

This blog is part of our Leadership of the Disciples series.

His brother was better known. While he came from the same lineage and background, more people knew of Peter than him. But, behind the scenes, he was the one who brought his brother to Jesus and was the first to follow him. He’s Andrew and he was friendly, often reaching out for fellowship with others.

Andrew reminds me of leaders who do more behind the scenes. Often, we encounter those who are good at pushing others, doing prep work in the background, and don’t seek the lime life. But they are good at being part of the team, contributing lots but not always getting the spotlight.

Our disciple behind the scenes was at lots of the big events in Jesus’ life. After Christ’s resurrection, some suggest that Andrew preached in Greece, Asia Minor, and Russia. A seventh-century story suggests that Andrew was crucified on an X-shaped cross in Greece. As I learned more Andrew, I see him helping others discover their gifts and using them in service to God. And it doesn’t always have to be out in the forefront.

Who are the Andrews in your life who are working hard behind the scenes?
