Fall Frisbee Fun Day

By Chad Hershberger

When I was a camper, my favorite camp activity was Frisbee Golf. At that time, we used cheap frisbees and threw them into hula hoops hanging in various trees around the field. One particular year I threw a pretty good game and kept the score card as a memento for several years.

When I started as director, we were still using hula hoops, but I wanted something more permanent. So our maintenance manager, Tom Watters, talked to a local welding shop who made us metal hoops. We made them in three different sizes (large, medium, and small) to try to make it a little more challenging. The advantage to using those was that we no longer had to take down the hoops in the winter and saved time designing a new course each year.

For several summers, we kept a tote board on my office door of staffers progress. We had a king, a queen, a prince, princess, and jester, based on our personal scores. It was a fun competition. I got to be king once, I think.

In 2007, we received a grant to get disc golf baskets and upgrade our course. We purchased 18 of the baskets and by this time, many of us were using the standard disc golf discs instead of the cheap frisbees (We still had campers use those frisbees, but the staff took our competition seriously).

Frisbee is still my favorite camp activity (although nine square is a close second!). I enjoy being outside and throwing the disc in the baskets. I enjoy it even more with some company, conversing as we enjoy this camp activity.

Whether you are a fan like me, or have never thrown a disc, I invite you to come to our Fall Frisbee Fun Day on Sunday, November 3. We will gather at 2:30 p.m. and play a round of Frisbee Golf. We have discs (both kinds) so if you don’t have one, no worries!

We held several of these days during the pandemic. It was our attempt to give people an opportunity to get outside and do something. We brought it back this year because… well, I wanted to play a round and enjoy the fall scenery. Won’t you join me?
