My Camp Mount Luther Journey – And How You Can Be Part of Summer 2026
By Chad Hershberger
July 19, 1981, was my first day at Camp Mount Luther. Encouraged by my Sunday School teacher, I arrived that Sunday afternoon and quickly fell in love with camp—making new friends, growing in faith, and enjoying God’s creation.
By the end of that week, I knew I wanted to be a counselor. I pursued that dream, and the summer after high school, I finally got to be a counselor. From First Aid training to leading my first campers, I was challenged and stretched in ways I had never imagined. One week, I worked with a camper who struggled to adjust—but by the end, hearing him say to his mom, “See! I made it!” made every challenge worthwhile.
Being a counselor gave me even more of what I loved as a camper: outdoor adventures, camp activities, and building a close-knit community. My fellow staff became lifelong friends. We laughed, learned, and grew together—and I spent five summers on staff in college, loving nearly every moment.
Camp work isn’t always easy. Long days, excessive heat, exhaustion, and hunger come with the territory. But as I always tell staff: “A bad day at camp is better than a good day anywhere else!” It’s rewarding work that truly changes lives.
Now, we’re recruiting for Summer Staff 2026! We’re looking for village leaders, cabin leaders, and support staff for June 2 – August 5. If you’re a college student—or know one who might thrive in this role—pray about giving camp a try. You could have your BEST. SUMMER. EVER. and make a lasting difference in the lives of campers.
