“Hi, Bob!”
It can get a bit confusing when everyone has the same name. We felt the confusion on Tuesday at camp this week when we were told we are all now, “Bob.”
As part of our look at “Created to Be Authentic,” we all took on the persona of Bob. And then we saw how much better it is to be unique and diverse and different, just as God has created us to be.
During Camel News Patrol on Wednesday, some of our crew talked with staff and campers to find out more about their unique selves. They also found out about their favorites at camp.
Evelyn Weiser talked to Bishop Craig Miller, who was on site for meetings on Wednesday. He told her that he likes to worship inside but enjoys walking the trails around camp, where he really feels God’s presence. His favorite worship song is “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High.”
Katy Bingman talked to James Gates, who volunteered this week. He’s been coming to camp for 26 years and loves to sing songs. His favorite place to go is Buffalo Gap and he loves to play disc golf with friends. He voiced “Mr. Commentator” this week and said, “If this game doesn’t go faster, I’m going to commentate on the giant Uno game.” This was stated as a memorable quote of the week!
Katy also talked to Dorian Phillips, who’s been a camper for five years. He likes to swim and likes Gaga Ball and worshipping in Evergreen Center. He also feels a stronger connection to God since he came to CML.
Noah and Benjamin Hayes talked to Burton Peese, a cabin leader. This is his first year at Camp Mount Luther. During Week 1, he joined a Capture the Flag game to help a struggling team and he had lots of fun. It’s also been reported that Burton likes stromboli. They also talked to Don Turner, our nurse, who has been volunteering for three years. His favorite camp memory is bringing his children to camp. Noah’s been coming to camp for four years and his favorite memory at camp was an overnight at Blacksnake. It’s Benjamin’s seventh year at camp and his favorite memory is fishing at the pond with camp friends.
Camp friends Ellie Schaeffer and Claire Hershberger talked to Ali Wyland, a cabin leader. This is her second year on staff, and she likes taco boats and getting ice cream sundaes in the face. Anne Gates was here this week, too. She likes baked oatmeal at camp and overnight campfires. She’s been going to camp for about 14 years. She loves kids and her CML friends. Ellie and Claire’s favorite quote this week was, “#good neighbor behavior.” Claire’s been coming to camp her whole life and her favorite camp memory was having a Taylor Swift “jam session” with the staff in CarolAnn’s car. Ellie’s been coming to camp for seven years and her favorite memory at camp was playing a game of Mafia led by Joey with a town named, “Da Baby.”
Speaking of Joey, he was popular again this week. Burton says, “Joey’s great. He cannot be defined by one moment!” Joey’s good at storytelling. He told us a story about his pet moth this week. A memorable quote was when he said, “Shhhh. This is my story” when someone tried to interject into his tale. They probably yelled that the moth’s name was Bob.
It’s been a good week as we celebrated Water Adventure with our campers. Next week, it’s Christmas in July!

Campers take the polar bear plunge early on Thursday morning. Some say the water was 48 degrees…or maybe some pesky associate director just switched the numbers around!
