Even though our summer camp season is over and we’ve highlighted our staffs’ favorite places, there are still several wonderful spots that weren’t chosen. But they are somebody’s favorite! To conclude the summer, we’ll keep showcasing the rest of Camp Mount Luther’s top spots. If you’ve been to camp, can you recall any memories from these spots? If you haven’t had the fortune to explore camp’s beauty, use your imagination… and come for a visit!
Behind the Evergreen Center is a path that leads to the ropes course. As you’re on your way to the ropes course, if you aren’t paying attention, you might miss the small path that leads off into the woods. It’s the path to Blacksnake, one of camp’s oldest campsites.
Named for the creek that slithers its way around the site (not to mention we have plenty of blacksnakes at camp)., Blacksnake is a special spot for many campers. With the embrace of the creek, plenty of trees (but not too many), a chapel area, and campfire ring, it’s a spacious and magical place for worship and overnights. You wouldn’t know from its tucked away trail that you’re about to stumble on a quiet place where God’s waiting to meet you.
Blacksnake recently received a much-needed facelift. The logs that had been used for many years as seating were decaying, so some of camp’s most dedicated benefactors, Ruth and Andy Gates, spent their time and money sourcing and building new benches. Along with the help of other volunteers during Family Camp this year, they combined repurposed old picnic tables and new wood to create comfortable seating. Now Blacksnake is a more welcoming place of worship for all ages.

We are so grateful for generous volunteers who keep our camp humming! If you ever have an idea for improvement, please feel free to let us know at cml@campmountluther.org.
Next time you come to camp, consider visiting Blacksnake for a moment of prayer. Rest on the new seating, enjoy the trickling of the creek, and breathe in the mossy camp air.
