Twas Christmas in July (A Visit from Jesus)

Pastor Karla Leiby wrote this for our Christmas in July celebrations this summer. We share it here to give your Christmas a little CML style!

Twas Christmas in July, and at the Camp Mount Luther Chapel
Not a creature was stirring, not even the camel.
Evergreen Center was decorated with care,
In hopes that Jesus soon would be there.

The campers were nestled all snug in the seats,
with the rhythm of gaga ball still in their feet.
and Chad in his PJ’s and Jim with a baby in his sack
all were ready for worship, but eager for snack.

When out on the patio, I heard a little patter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, without spilling my juice,
Just an orange ball of fur, it’s only Goose.

Christmas carols were sung both loud and mild,
its Christmas at camp, so excited is every child.
We rejoice in the story of Jesus’s birth,
so happy he chose to join us here on earth.

The Spirit of Christmas arrived just that quick,
even in July with the temperature of 86!
Silent Night filled the air, with our candles a flame,
Jesus watched them, loved them, and called them by name!

Now Josh! now Amber! Now Geneva, Stella, Daphne and Mary.
Come Carson, Aaron, Charley, and Daniel! Come Aiden, Issac, Ezra, Nora and Ben.
Front and center for worship came the roll call,
To learn about Jesus and how we are created to be disciples to all.

His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
The baby so tiny, yet a true King you know.

He was dressed all in rags, from his head to his feet,
And his bed was a manager with animals for heat.
A star shone above him so very bright,
It guided the guests that first Christmas night.

The Angels, shepherds, and wisemen, all came to see,
the child who came to save you and me.
Mary and Joseph the parents so full of love,
knowing their Son was sent from heaven above.

Many gifts he received, Gold, Frankincense and Mir,
but he did not come for the gifts, he came to serve!
To  feed and to heal, to forgive and to save,
But most of all love is what he gave.

He grew up into a man and went straight to his work,
And filled the whole world with his handiwork.
He taught us to love and never to boast,
To be disciples for others when they need it most.

And up on the cross he took his last breath,
On that third day he arose and conquered death!
His presence we know is with us this day,
His love, mercy and grace are here to stay.

And I heard Him exclaim, as the candles grow dim,
“Merry Christmas, and Peace to all” as we sang our last hymn.
After a week at Camp Mount Luther, the children all agree
That we are all created to be
free, authentic, brave, and disciples of Jesus’ love.
And that Christmas is a gift that comes from above.
