Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-4:5
All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.
Reflection:
Paul writes these words to Timothy knowing that he, himself does not have much time left in this world to proclaim the gospel. He encourages Timothy to be ready. Be prepared. No matter the season, no matter the hour. He warns him as well to be careful. To be sure what he is learning is true and to keep going even when it gets tough.
We too, like Timothy, hear Paul’s words. A much different time and place for certain, but still, here we are, proclaiming the message, sharing that good news of Jesus’ love. Still being careful, diligent, and ready. We do this when we dig deeply into scripture. We study and learn from all who have gone before us and have taught us about the parables, about Jesus, about love, about grace. We continue to teach our younger generations and some who may have never heard the good news.
As Paul encourages Timothy, so too we are encouraged. Be ready. Go out and proclaim Jesus Christ, born, crucified, and risen for each and every person you know. Share the gift of grace even in small ways. Fulfill what God has called each of us to do. Share the great gift of love in a world that desperately needs love. Amen.
